A distributed key-value database for modern web applications.

Membase is an open-source (Apache 2.0 license) distributed, key-value database management system optimized for storing data behind interactive web applications. These applications must service many concurrent users; creating, storing, retrieving, aggregating, manipulating and presenting data in real-time. Supporting these requirements, membase processes data operations with quasi-deterministic low latency and high sustained throughput.    (more...)

Does the world really need another NoSQL database?

Before embarking on what has (so far) amounted to nearly 10 man-years of development effort, we invested countless hours trying to convince ourselves that the answer to that question was “no.” No sane person embarks on a project of this magnitude without careful evaluation of existing solutions.

Our need was focused: we wanted a simple, fast, elastic data management solution that could reliably store the data behind our interactive web applications. It had to be easy to develop against and even easier to manage; provide consistently low latency with high throughput; and it had to support dynamic reconfiguration of a live cluster, without impacting running applications.   (more...)
